WIC (Women, Infants and Children)
WIC is a nutrition program intended to prevent the occurrence of medical problems and to improve the health status of pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to five years of age. WIC provides nutrition and breastfeeding education, health screenings, medical referrals and vouchers for nutritious foods. The goals is to help children achieve optimal nutritional status before five years of age.
EligibilityThe Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federally funded nutrition program that works hand and hand with medical care. WIC has a successful record of improving the diets of participants who are at risk for nutrition-related health problems. Eligibility criteria includes an income screening, a health history, a blood test for low iron status, measurements for height and weight and a dietary assessment. Those found eligible for the program based on financial need and by reason of nutritional risk receive nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion, vouchers for nutritious foods and referrals to health care. The program serves eligible pregnant, post-partum and breastfeeding women, infants to one year and children under age five.Locations |
